On 1 May, the main story on the Guardian’s website highlighted the devastating impacts of failing to recognise ectopic pregnancy. The article included stark statistics on patient safety incidents and included cases of moderate and severe harm as well as deaths. Two deaths occurred just months ago in 2022.
Munira Oza, Director of The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, says that: “It is shocking that women are still suffering severe harm and even dying from ectopic pregnancy.” She emphasises that education is needed on the condition so that medical attention can be quickly sought and that it is crucial to have access to specialist early pregnancy care.

The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust strives hard to raise awareness of the condition. We are currently creating a project to help healthcare professionals spot the signs of ectopic pregnancy and make referrals to early pregnancy care for symptomatic women and people.
